In the first years of the oil boom, the oil patch earned a reputation as a dangerous place, partially fueled by the number of traffic crashes. There also were a good number of workplace accidents.
Safety always has been a priority of the oil industry, but with so many companies involved in the oil play it was difficult to maintain safety standards at times. Gov. Doug Burgum and many operators in the Bakken met Thursday to announce a new standardized training program for oil industry workers.

“The unifying force here today is that you’ve got a group of terrific North Dakota companies that care about the people who work for them,” Governor Doug Burgum said. “Today is all about safety; it’s all about work force.”
